Army personnel throughout the country are pretending to be citizen groups and putting up propaganda posters thanking the government for its speedy coronavirus pandemic response and other government measures, local sources said on Monday. The Thai army is pretending to be various citizens groups and putting up posters thanking the government for its covid response #thailand #ข้าวมันไก่สามพี่น้อง #โควิด19 https://t.co/B7uzI0xq6l— Thai Enquirer (@ThaiEnquirer) June 1, 2020
Local groups say that posters have been put up in Khon Kaen Province, Ubol Ratchathani, Beung Karn, and Chiang Mai.
Similar signs have appeared in the country’s southern provinces.
“We saw soldiers putting up posters thanking General Prayut at the university and at the government offices,” said Naruedon Jaidee, a student protest leader in Ubol. “It said thank you on behalf of some student group we have never heard of.”
“The posters were thanking him for saving us from COVID,” Naruedon said.
Citizens in Thailand’s southern provinces have also told Thai Enquirer on Monday that soldiers in the country’s south were carrying out similar programs.
“There are new posters around government buildings and hospitals thanking the government for helping the people of the south during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Watoo Muhammed.
“We do not know who put them up but many appeared overnight.”
This is not the first time that the government has used the army to put up posters praising its rule. Under the previous junta, also led by General Prayut Chan-ocha, the army was seen putting up propaganda pieces on behalf of various citizen groups.
One poster put up by soldiers in Amnat Charoen Province and shared widely on the internet reads, “The farmers of Amnat Charoen want to thank General Prayut Chan-ocha for helping fix agricultural problems…”
Calls made by Thai Enquirer to the army spokesperson and the prime minister’s office were not returned.
It is unclear if the soldiers in question were acting on behalf of the local groups or at the direction of the army command.
