UPDATE — Latest information on the health of Princess Bajrakitiyabha aka Ong Bha, from medical and royal sources. This mostly just repeats information I have shared before, but I think it is important that everybody understands what has happened. She has been brain dead since December 14 and will never recover. The cause of death was a ruptured brain aneurysm which led to a subarachnoid hemorrhage. This caused all her other organs to fail too.
A soldier made heroic CPR efforts and broke some of her ribs, which I hope he does not face any punishment for, because broken ribs are normal during desperate CPR when you are trying to save somebody who is dying.
But by the time she arrived at Pak Chong Nana Hospital she was already brain dead.
She is being kept artificially alive by an ECMO “heart lung machine” plus a hemodialysis machine to support her lack of kidney function and she is being sustained by total parenteral nutrition which is a method of feeding that bypasses the gastrointestinal tract by providing nutrients intravenously.
She’s dead but her body is being kept alive with increasingly desperate measures. She will never wake up but we don’t know how long the monarchy will wait to admit this, it could be weeks, months or even years.
This is a terribly sad situation and as I have said before I’m not writing about it to try to attack the royal family, I just think Thais deserve to be told the truth and it is my job as a journalist to try to do that.
