Very significant that on his 72nd birthday, Vajiralongkorn has held a ceremony to confirm the elevation of Chalermsuk Yugala to the position of พระวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้า.
This strongly suggests that Dipangkorn will be named crown prince next year, with Chalermsuk as regent because Dipangkorn is not mentally competent to reign without a regent. The role of regent was previously intended for Bajrakitiyabha but she is brain dead after an aneurysm in December 2022 so they need an alternative.
Chalermsuk is gay so is not a long-term threat to the dynastic ascendancy of the Mahidol line if Dipangkorn can produce an heir.
All of this is bad news for Vajiralongkorn’s estranged son Vachareasorn Vivacharawongse who has been aggressively trying to reinsert himself into the line of succession in the past year, despite being married to a US women and having a high-profile Ukrainian sugar baby who visits him often in Thailand, which excludes him from the line of succession according to palace law.
