It's about time someone in the Thai media circles to use their journalistic skills in a courageously proper way.

นับตั้งแต่ที่คณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ หรือ คสช. เข้ามาบริหารประเทศ บัดนี้เป็นเวลา 8 เดือนแล้ว แต่ผู้บริหารประเทศก็คงยังจำกัดสิทธิเสรีภาพของสื่อว่าห้ามไม่ให้พูดหรือเขียนเรื่องที่ sensitive ต่อบ้านเมือง และเป็นที่รู้กันว่าการที่สื่อจะเขียนเรื่องในเชิงลบเกี่ยวกับ คสช. ก็กระทำไม่ได้

It has been eight months since the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has seized power and ruled the country. For eight months, the media have been silenced, unable to report anything that might be considered “sensitive” towards the stability of the country. In other words, there is no freedom of the press in Thailand.

หรือแม้กระทั่งเวลาผู้สื่อข่าวตั้งคำถาม ก็มักจะได้รับคำตักเตือนว่า “ไม่สร้างสรรค์” แถมยังมีการขู่อีกว่า หากผู้สื่อข่าวยังทำตัวแบบนี้อีก ก็จะถูกเรียกไปปรับทัศนคติเหมือนกัน

Even when asking questions, we are criticised for being unconstructive, while also being threatened to be summoned for “attitude adjustment” if we continue to ask what in fact are discerning questions.

แต่สื่อมิใช่กระบอกเสียงของรัฐบาล แท้ที่จริงแล้วรัฐบาลควรจะเข้าใจว่าหน้าที่พื้นฐานของสื่อมวลชนคือการเป็น watchdog หรือเป็นหมาเฝ้าบ้าน คอย monitor การทำงานของทุกๆ ฝ่าย ไม่ว่าใครจะเข้ามาเป็นรัฐบาลก็ตาม เพราะฉะนั้นในเมื่อตอนนี้รัฐบาลทหารเข้ามาบริหารเป็นประเทศ ก็เป็นหน้าที่ของสื่อมวลชนที่จะตรวจสอบการทำงานของรัฐบาลทหารเหมือนกัน ซึ่งก็แปลว่าย่อมที่จะมีสิทธิเสรีภาพของความเป็นสื่อที่จะสามารถตั้งคำถามเพื่อตรวจสอบได้ หรือแม้กระทั่งสามารถวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ได้ ตราบใดก็ตามที่เสนอทั้งสองด้าน

But the media is not a government PR. What the government needs to understand is our basic role as a watchdog; that is, to monitor the performance of all sides, no matter who becomes government. And since the military regime is currently administrating the country, it is our duty to see whether the army is doing its job right. That means that we have the right to question their acts, or even criticize them, provided that we show both sides of the story.

การยกเลิกกฎอัยการศึก นอกจะช่วยให้สื่อสามารถทำงานได้ดีขึ้นแล้วยังสามารถสะท้อนความจริงและปัญหาให้รัฐบาลได้รับรู้ตรงกับความเป็นจริง และภาพพจน์ของรัฐบาลก็จะดีขึ้นในสายตานานาชาติด้วย ถึงตอนนั้น คสช. จึงจะถือว่าคืนความสุขให้กับประชาชนชาวไทยอย่างแท้จริง

The lifting of the martial law will not only make it easier for the media to do their job, but also reflect the truth of what is happening in society, and improve the government’s image in the eyes of the international community. Then the NCPO will be considered as returning true happiness to the people of Thailand.
