The UN Secretary-General says he is ‘deeply distressed’ by Israel’s complete siege of the Gaza Strip which will worsen an already dire situation. He also says this latest fighting did not arise from a vacuum, but from a decades-long occupation with no end in sight.

Speaking after the Israeli defence minister said he had ordered a cutoff of electricity and deliveries of food, fuel and other supplies to the territory, Guterres said the 'humanitarian situation in Gaza was extremely dire before these hostilities, now it will only deteriorate exponentially'.
