ปรากฏการณ์นี้เกิดขึ้นเมื่อแสงอาทิตย์ส่องผ่านละอองน้ำหรือผลึกน้ำแข็งขนาดจิ๋วที่ลอยอยู่ในก้อนเมฆ

หากก้อนเมฆเหล่านั้นมีความบางเบาและตั้งอยู่ใกล้กับดวงอาทิตย์หรือดวงจันทร์ แสงจะถูก "แยกออก" เป็นสีสันต่างๆ ก่อให้เกิดลวดลายที่สว่างไสวและระยิบระยับคล้ายกับสีรุ้ง
