ไทยเริ่มสมัครเป็นสมาชิก UNSC ตั้งแต่ปี 2007 แต่ถอนตัวไปครั้งหนึ่งในช่วงปี 2011 และกลับมาสมัครใหม่อีกครั้งเพื่อดำรงตำแหน่งในวาระปี 2017-2018
