for the first time I got a shock when everyone suddenly stood upright. I thought a fire had broken out and people were preparing to run for the exits.

Haven't been to the cinema in ages but if I were to go, I would stand. It was one of the first things I learned that was a "required" in Thailand (Rama IX being much more revered than his son) and eouldn't want to risk there being a super Royalist behind me.

I used to just relax outside until the main feature started. The last show I watched there, way back, was the tank movie "Fury". Seemed appropriate.

Just to clarify, in response to some comments on this photo I posted before, I had no intention of criticising the couple who chose to stand, it is their right to stand if they want.
I have never heard of any Thai royalist being abused or threatened for choosing to stand.
We respect their right to stand or sit.
For many years, Thais who chose to sit were abused, attacked and in the case of Chotisak Onsoong charged with lese majeste.
Not standing is not a crime.
Standing is not a crime.
Forcing people to pretend to revere a hated monarchy is a crime:
