This gives me goosebumps. This student-led protest is by far the largest demonstration in Thailand since the coup took place in 2014. Standing in the middle of the protesters is the Democracy Monument — a symbolic construction implying that this country was intended to be a democracy.
The protesters call for the dissolution of the parliament, changes to the constitution, end to harassment of critics by government officials, and monarchy reforms. The last demand is critical since this is the first time any protests dare to speak directly to the power of the monarchy -- the institution that has been shielded from criticism by law.
This round of protests started after the government had eased the COVID-19 restrictions last month. Since the first protest in July, a number of protest leaders were harassed and arrested for "instigating chaos." And since our government is the entity that violates basic human rights and freedoms itself, we do no longer trust the government to protect the protesters. We need the world to keep an eye on us and to put pressure on our government when possible.
Please help us spread the news.
