An open letter to Secretary-General of the United Nations

March 28, 2019

The Honorable António Guterres
Secretary-General of the United Nations.
New York, New York

Dear Secretary Guterres,

We are Americans of Thai origin of some 550,000 living, working and studying in America.

Now that the Thai election is over and the newly created political party supporting Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha came in with the most votes through vote-buying, intimidation and outright fraud. Nonetheless other parties have reach a consensus to form a coalition government which is in-line with the democratization process. Prayuth and his gangs, as I was told, may be in the process of staging another coup or doing something gravely illegal to control and prolong seizing the power, yet again.

If he is successful, a dire consequences in the lives of the Thai people would ensue for another four years or more.

All of us hereby wish to urge you to withdraw the recognition of Thailand's dictator, Gen. Prayuth Chan-Ocha as head of the Thai government.

Here are some of the reasons:

1. Gen. Prayuth Chan-Ocha came into power through an illegal coup d'état in May 2014. Such an act has no place in any civilized world!

2. He is the illegitimate prime minister and does not represent Thailand or her people as the leader.

3. He is running the country without the consent of the people. He seized power from a democratically elected government of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

4. He has appointed his military cronies to head all the important departments at will and without the keen knowledge of the function and its integrity.

5. He has jailed countless number of innocent people who oppose him and the through the use of the country's despicable Article 112, also known as the less majeste law.

6. He has created the notorious Article 44 which is equivalent to the martial law; whereby, he could do just about anything without facing any consequences.

7. The recognition is of no benefit to members of the U.N. except give frustrations and confusions to the pro-democracy activists in Thailand.

8. He's the most corrupt self-appointed Prime Minister Thailand has ever had.

By recognizing him, the UN may appear to be supporting a dictatorship. Thus we would effectively be legitimizing him, even though it is wrong.

Additionally, you may be breaching the law of the United Nations Charter with regard to participating and encouraging in a dictatorship and human rights violation.

Further, you may be hurting the people of Thailand by rewarding an oppressive regime who is holding the Thai people hostage.

The following is a poignant message shared by 90% of the Thai people. It was written by a forlorn, concerned and hopeless Thai citizen in Bangkok.

Translation: "We are Thai people. We didn't elect him. He came into power by using force and guns. We are under constant threats. He uses his military thugs to tie our hands and legs. He invaded our home and terrorized us. We didn't ask him to come in the dead of the night and searched our home. Please understand this important point. We don't want this oppressive regime to stay but we don't know what to do.”

The recent election on March 24, 2019 is nothing but sham. The so-called election was under the frame work of the dictator-designed Constitution whereby all members of the Senate would be appointed. Further, the PM does not have to participate in an election either. He, too, can be appointed.

Sincerely yours,

Narisara Viwatchara
