เมื่อปลายเดือนพฤศจิกายนปี 2021 นักกิจกรรมในขบวนการเรียกร้องประชาธิปไตยและนักวิชาการอย่างน้อย 5 คนได้รับอีเมลแจ้งเตือนจาก Apple ว่า “โทรศัพท์ของคุณกำลังตกเป็นเป้าหมายของแฮ็กเกอร์ที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากรัฐ”

นั่นคือวินาทีที่นำมาสู่คำถามว่า “พวกเขาถูกโจมตีจากอะไร และใครคือผู้อยู่เบื้องหลัง?”

การดำเนินเปิดการสอบสวนโดย iLaw ร่วมกับ Citizen Lab มหาวิทยาลัยโตรอนโต แคนาดา เผยว่า โทรศัพท์ของพวกเขาถูกเจาะโดย ‘เปกาซัส’ (Pegasus) สปายแวร์ประสิทธิภาพสูงที่สามารถเปลี่ยนโทรศัพท์มือถือให้กลายเป็นอุปกรณ์สอดแนมจากระยะไกลได้โดยที่เจ้าของไม่รู้ตัว

แม้ว่าจะยังไม่สามารถชี้นิ้วไปที่ผู้กระทำการได้ 100% แต่ท่ามกลางการเคลื่อนไหวเรียกร้องประชาธิปไตย ดูเหมือนว่าผู้ที่จะได้รับประโยชน์จากการ ‘จับตา’ สอดส่องผู้เห็นต่างทางการเมืองจะมีเพียงแค่รัฐบาลจากการสืบทอดอำนาจของคณะรัฐประหารเท่านั้น

กระนั้น นี่เป็นเพียงแค่จิ๊กซอว์ชิ้นหนึ่งของปรากฏการณ์และความท้าทายจากการใช้เทคโนโลยีสอดส่องในการละเมิดสิทธิเสรีภาพที่เกิดขึ้นทั่วโลก

“Is the Big Brother still always watching you?”

In November 2021, at least five Thai pro-democracy activists and academics received a notification from Apple, stating that “State-sponsored attackers may be targeting your phone.”
.
This sparked the question, “What kind of attacks were they and who was responsible for them?”
.
An investigation by iLaw, a Thai human rights NGO and Citizen Lab of Toronto University, Canada uncovered that their phones had been attacked by ‘Pegasus’, a highly sophisticated mercenary spyware capable of turning a phone into a remote surveillance device.
.
It still cannot be definitely concluded who is behind the attacks. However, against the backdrop of democratic protests, it seems that no one has enough motives or would benefit from the attacks, except the Thai government led by the former junta leader.
.
Nonetheless, the case of Pegasus in Thailand is just one that illustrates the global challenge on human rights and freedoms, namely digital surveillance.
