EXCLUSIVE—This document gives more insight into the cost to taxpayers of the many years Vajiralongkorn has chosen to live mainly in Germany.
The document shows the estimate of the Thai embassy in Berlin of the costs incurred for just five months, from May 1 to September 30, 2016, when Vajiralongkorn was still just crown prince and had not yet become king.
This budget estimate shows the expenses to be incurred by three embassy staff from the Thai embassy in Berlin, one employee of the Thai consulate in Frankfurt, and three staff sent from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok.
It includes their projected costs for hotel accommodation, meals, transport, per diem, equipment rental, car rental, and miscellaneous expenses.
The total estimated cost is €938,485 or 38,477,885 baht, for seven diplomatic staff for just five months.
It does not cover all the other vast expenses of Vajiralongkorn's stay in Germany, for himself, his harem and his entourage. It does not cover all the other hotel rooms for the king and his entourage at the Hilton Hotel at Munich Airport and the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It does not cover the cost of his private fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft and helicopters. It is just a fraction of what Vajiralongkorn's stay in Germany costs taxpayers.
Vajiralongkorn has spent most of his time in Germany since 2007. For years he lived at the Hilton, formerly the Kempinski, where he still rents the entire top floor of one of the two wings of the hotel for some staff. After 2016 he began living mostly at the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl instead.
By now, the total cost must be billions of dollars.
