It was Thai government's ill-advised move to highlight Hun Sen's alleged violation of the Cambodian constitution. And it backfired, with the Cambodian King publicly granting Hun Sen the authority to defend the Kingdom. This raises a crucial question: have Thai academics and the government—especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs bureacrats and diplomats —ever studied the history of Thai-Cambodian relations from a Cambodian perspective?
Do they not understand how fed up Cambodians are with Thailand's (Siam's) repeated interference in their internal politics?
If you look back to the early Rattanakosin period, you'll see how Thailand and Vietnam took turns installing their own puppets as Cambodian king - until the French arrived.
This latest move only reopens old festering historical wounds, making contemporary Cambodians feel that Thailand is trying to sow discord within their nation anew.
