วันที่ 18 ต.ค. ที่ฮ่องกง นายทักษิณ ชินวัตร อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี ให้สัมภาษณ์สถานีโทรทัศน์ เอ็นเอชเคสื่อของญี่ปุ่น ถึงการเลือกตั้งใหญ่ในประเทศไทยที่คาดว่าจะจัดขึ้นภายในเดือน ก.พ.-พ.ค. 2562 ตามที่รัฐบาล คสช. ประกาศไว้ โดยเอ็นเอชเค รายงานว่าแม้ว่าพรรคฝ่ายค้านอาจจะชนะเลือกตั้ง แต่ทหารอาจพยายามรักษาอำนาจไว้
อดีตนายกฯ ระบุว่า การปกครองโดยทหารอาจถึงจุดจบ หากฝ่ายประชาธิปไตยได้ที่นั่งในสภาผู้แทนราษฎรมากกว่า 300 ที่นั่ง จาก 500 ที่นั่ง รัฐบาลจะกลายเป็นรัฐบาลเสียงข้างน้อย ไม่สามารถผ่านงบประมาณ และยังต้องเจอกับการอภิปรายไม่ไว้วางใจ ที่วุฒิสภาไม่มีส่วนในการลงคะแนน รัฐบาลก็จะล่มในไม่กี่สัปดาห์
สื่อญี่ปุ่นรายงานด้วยว่า อดีตนายกฯ ยังคงอยู่ระหว่างลี้ภัยนอกประเทศ นับตั้งแต่ถูกรัฐประหารล้มรัฐบาลเมื่อปี 2549 เช่นเดียวกับน.ส.ยิ่งลักษณ์ ชินวัตร ผู้เป็นน้องสาว ซึ่งเป็นอดีตนายกฯ อีกคนหนึ่งที่ถูกรัฐประหารในปี 2557 และต้องเดินทางออกนอกประเทศ

Thailand's military-led government says that, despite multiple delays, the general election is supposed to happen sometime between February and May of next year. But there are concerns that even if the opposition wins the military may try to hold on to power.
In an interview with NHK, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra says military rule could be coming to an end.
Thaksin met with NHK in Hong Kong on Thursday. He said, "If the pro-democracy camps are much bigger that 300 seats out of 500 in the Lower House, the government cannot run, because it becomes a minority government. Under budget scrutiny, no confidence debate, the senators cannot be included. So the government can collapse in a few weeks, not months."
Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile after being ousted in a 2006 coup. The military also toppled a civilian government led by Thaksin's younger sister four years ago.
Even in exile, the family remains influential in Thai politics, especially among rural voters.
And Thaksin is not ruling out a political comeback, saying he can do something better for people who support him.
