The military have seized power and declared martial law in a swift coup which climaxed a day of bloody fighting between left and right wing students. The country's Prime Minister Seni Pramoj was "invited" to the headquarters of the new military authorities and placed under arrest, "for his own security". The government radio said that the country's supreme military commander and former defence minister, Sangad Charloyoo will head the new government.

Aftermath of violent student demonstartions held in the wake of the coup which brought Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorn back to power. A massacre of protesting students was carried out by the right-wing after faked photos of sudents hanging the Crown Prince of Thailand were sent to the Thai press, inflaming the extreme right. Police and amry crack down on all demonstrations and confiscate weapons.
