Launched Monday by the Freedom to Report initiative, the petition criticizes Israeli-imposed restrictions on foreign reporting from the territory that "silence independent observation."
It has been signed by many prominent journalists including Christiane Amanpour, Anderson Cooper, Clarissa Ward, and Mehdi Hassan. DW journalists are also among the signatories.
The petition says Israel’s restrictions constitute the worst press blackout in modern conflict, setting a perilous global precedent.
“When governments can unilaterally shut down access to war zones,” the petition warns, “they undermine the very foundation of democracy: press freedom as a check on power.”
Some journalists have been allowed to enter Gaza with the Israeli military, but most reporting from the enclave is being done by Palestinian journalists living there.
Gaza’s rapidly worsening hunger crisis means journalists, too, are battling malnutrition and starvation.
Since the war began after the Oct. 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel, 186 journalists have been killed in Gaza and 90 have been imprisoned, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
On Friday, dozens of members of the International News Safety Institute, a nonprofit group, issued a statement calling on Israel to allow journalists in Gaza who are facing starvation to leave the enclave, and for international reporters to be allowed entry.
Signatories included Deutsche Welle, The Washington Post, The Financial Times and The Guardian.

The first aerials of Gaza for months document the territory's continued destruction.
Filmed by ITV News International Editor Emma Murphy, on board a plane dropping aid into Gaza, the images show huge swathes of land in ruins. Journalists are prevented from entering Gaza by Israel.
Looking out the plane windows from 15,000 feet is the closest any foreign media has been to seeing the aftermath of 22 months of war, apart from trips arranged by the Israeli military.
