Conscripts were forced to sign contracts in 2014-2015 as well. The fact that the Russian military is relying on conscripts for this war is both a sign of weakness for the Russian military and an even greater political risk for Putin. Conscripts are not supposed to be sent to war.
I think Moscow underestimated the amount of resistance they would face, the casualties they would sustain, the amount of time this would take, the response from foreign governments and corporations, and how much their soldiers would need to be informed of what they were doing. 2/I think the question is whether they can take Kyiv before there is a domestic backlash to casualties and economic disruptions. Putin clearly wants to take Kyiv before conducting serious negotiations, but it isn't clear Russia can do so fast enough, especially if Kharkiv holds out https://t.co/FIQQ9GVL4s

The irony is that Russian officials have long (correctly) thought the US was crazy for invading Iraq. And Putin has a fairly successful record in employing military force, but he decided to pursue maximalist political objectives this time based on poor assumptions. 3/

The Ukrainians are indeed attempting to recreate the events of the 1904 Russo-Japanese war where the Japanese managed to hold their ground for a year and rely on Russia collapsing internally after a revolution.

Domestic backlash will take 6 to 18 mo to form. Much of Russia is rural and a bit aging. Propaganda and locked media will hold them for a while. When farmers can’t buy fertilizer for spring planting and neighbors kids don’t come home, enquiring minds will begin to want to know.
