Thousands of companies are now suing for tariff refunds, because apparently the “Tariff Man” forgot tariffs are still governed by laws and math. Court filings already top 1,000+ cases, with big names like Costco in the pile, all trying to lock in repayment of duties paid under the IEEPA tariff regime. And the potential refund bill being discussed is massive, easily into the hundreds of billions depending on what ultimately gets unwound.
And as the annoyingly awake reader you are, you might ask: why aren’t China, Europe, Vietnam, etc. filing lawsuits too, if they’re the ones “paying billions”?
Because they’re not. US importers pay the duty to US Customs. Then they pass it along to American shoppers like a little patriotic tip jar at the checkout.
