ผู้ถ่ายภาพคือ ซามาร์ อาบู เอลอฟ ช่างภาพชาวปาเลสไตน์ ทำงานกับ The New York Times ตัวเธอเองสูญเสียญาติไปกว่า 30 ชีวิตในสงครามครั้งนี้ เธอบอกว่าไม่ได้มีความสุขที่ภาพถ่ายของเธอได้รางวัล เธอต้องการให้ภาพถ่ายของน้องมะห์มุดช่วยนำไปสู่การยุติสงครามทันที พอกันทีกับการฆ่าฟันพลเรือนที่ป้องกันตัวเองไม่ได้
น้องเป็นเพียงหนึ่งในเด็กพิการที่ถูกตัดแขนขาหลายพันคนในฉนวนกาซา ปัจจุบันน้องได้รับความช่วยเหลือให้ไปอยู่ที่กาตาร์ “หนึ่งในเรื่องยากที่สุดที่แม่ของมะห์มูดอธิบายให้ดิฉันฟังก็คือ ตอนที่มะห์มูดรู้ว่าแขนของเขาถูกตัด ประโยคแรกที่เขาพูดกับแม่คือ ‘แล้วผมจะกอดแม่ได้อย่างไร” ช่างภาพบอก

‘Mahmoud Ajjour, Aged Nine’ by Samar Abu Elouf for The New York Times, is the World Press Photo of the Year in 2025.
Mahmoud Ajjour (9) was injured during an Israeli attack on Gaza City in March 2024. As his family fled the Israeli assault, Mahmoud turned back to urge others onward. An explosion then severed one of his arms and mutilated the other. The family were evacuated to Qatar where, after medical treatment, Mahmoud is learning to use his feet to play games on his phone, write, and open doors. Aside from that, he needs special assistance for most daily activities, such as eating and dressing. Photographed here in Doha, Qatar on 28 June 2024.
In this video, photographer Samar Abu Elouf talks about why and how she made this photograph, and her relationship with Mahmoud. Coming from Gaza herself, Samar Abu Elouf was also evacuated in December 2023 and lives in the same Doha apartment complex as Mahmoud in Qatar.
Additionally, Lucy Conticello, global jury chair of the 2025 World Press Photo Contest and Director of Photography for M, Le Monde's weekend magazine, shares why she finds this work important.
