Understanding Hunger Strike Key Point

A hunger strike is a method of non-violent resistance in which participants refuse to eat as an act of political protest, or to provoke the feelings of guilt in others, usually to achieve a specific goal, such as a policy change.

Unlike other protests, a hunger strike has no direct effect on the intended target. The protester suffers, not the person protested against. The protester relies on the moral force of their actions, or the publicity value, to achieve something.
