Open Letter Regarding Confession in Article 112 Cases

This is not the first time that people, well-intentioned and ill-intentioned, have asked me to confess to being guilty of violation of Article 112. Most recently, during a trial last month, a judge told me that if I confessed, I could be out (of prison) already. At the appeal level, if one retracts one’s plea to fight the case, one can confess. If one confesses, one will get out (of prison). I believe that the judge was well-intentioned because he wanted me to receive my freedom swiftly. Confession is an incredibly simple matter, and also an incredibly difficult action to take.

There is no child who does not want to get out to take care of their parents and grandparents. There is no father who does not want to get out to take care of his children as they grow up. I am both the oldest son in my family and the father of two children who are growing up. If the facts were that I was accused of theft or assault, even if I did not what I was accused of doing, I would be ready to confess to receive a reduction of punishment and to get out of prison quickly in order to do my duty as a son and as a father. But those are not the facts.

My accusations are not those of an ordinary criminal case. It is the injustice of an era. It is the struggle of an era. My duty is much heavier than that of an ordinary criminal case. In one’s life, there are some actions that one must take, whether or not one wishes to do so. And, there are some actions that one can do which fulfill the very meaning of having been born. Such actions carry the honor and dignity of being human, which run deeper than any other form of prestige. Speaking the truth and proposing to reform the institution of the monarchy is such an action.

I did not scale the walls of a hotel and climb into a secret room and then speak about what I encountered. What I said cannot easily be taken back. Everyone in society has seen what I spoke about with their own eyes. Everyone has seen the truth themselves. It would be quite odd and peculiar if I were to take back what I said and claim that I had told lies.

The court can rule to lock me up in prison. But they cannot rule that 2+2 = 5.

I would like to thank those with good intentions who want to see me receive freedom quickly. And, I would like to express my apologies to the far right-wing people who will not see my confession.
I maintain that I spoke the truth and stand firm in the proposal for reform of the institution of the monarchy. The struggle may lead to pain, suffering, and hardship. I willingly accept this.

With trust and faith,

Arnon Nampa
