At just 34 years old, Zohran Mamdani has made history as the first Muslim ever elected Mayor of New York City.
His rise marks a defining moment for progressive politics proving that left-wing ideas can still win, amidst a right-wing Trump presidency and the resurgence of global far-right movements.
From viral campaign videos to bold promises of rent control, taxing the rich, and free public transport, Mamdani captured the imagination of millions.
Other European left parties see political lessons from the New York Mayor’s win and calling his win a 'triumph for progressive politics'.
But how did a once unknown activist from Queens become one of the most powerful mayors in America?
