Thailand state TV and radio stations’ websites are down, hit by DDoS attack

According to Anonymous, several major Thailand Governmental TV and Radio Stations have been taken offline today following a record 990 Gbps DDoS attack launched by a Mirai botnet.
At the moment of publication, Thai TV Global is resetting the connections but sometimes returns web pages, as TV 11 also does, but the latter appears to be completely down. TV 5 is returning “502 Bad Gateway”, while MCOT is up, but it has been offline and may go offline later, as it is also being attacked.
DDoS, where the first D stands for “distributed”, and DoS means “denial of service”, is one of the most common types of cyberattacks. An adversary aims to exhaust the resources of the target, be those bandwidth capacity, RAM size, or CPU performance. “Distributed” means that the victim is being flooded with requests from multiple machines.
In 2000s, many DDoS attacks used to be performed by enthusiasts such as cyber hooligans or political activists. They simultaneously sent requests from their own computers, often by running innocuous ‘ping’ command-line tool. Normally used for network diagnostics to determine if the node is available, the utility could overload the target’s uplink with overwhelming requests.
Things have changed in the past few years, and even this year’s attacks are different from those we could see in 2016. The perpetrators usually rely on botnets, which are networks of infected devices (zombies) directed with the same command-and-control (C&C) server. Companies lose millions of dollars, being unable to provide services, getting infected during the incident, or having sensitive data stolen as DDoS are now often used as part of more complex attacks.
Because of poor security of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, they are especially often zombified. The type of malware residing in IoT is called Mirai. The main feature of Mirai is that the malicious application automatically finds vulnerable devices to infect and conscripts them into a botnet.
Companies take various actions to mitigate the risk of a DDoS attack. The technical measures include content delivery networks (CDN), web application firewalls (WAF) and traditional port-based ones, anti-DDoS appliances and DDoS mitigation services. To be as informed as possible, businesses also engage in such activities as cooperation with other companies and law enforcement and addressing security consultants.
