TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's Emperor Akihito has expressed his intention to abdicate, a government source said Wednesday.
His 56-year-old son, Crown Prince Naruhito, is expected to succeed the 82-year-old emperor and ascend the Chrysanthemum throne.
The emperor does not have a health problem requiring him to end his reign immediately, a government source said, adding the emperor has been expressing his intention to abdicate to people around him for about a year.
In an effort to ease the burden on the aging emperor and empress, the Imperial Household Agency said in May it would reduce their official duties, such as by cutting the number of meetings with administrative agency chiefs and other guests at the Imperial Palace.
Another government source said the Imperial House Law would require revision as it does not envisage abdication.
Throughout his reign spanning over 27 years, the emperor, together with his wife Empress Michiko, 81, has continued to carry out his official duties, encouraging the nation through multiple disasters and making numerous trips to former battlegrounds at home and abroad to mourn the war dead.
Upon the death of his 87-year-old father Emperor Hirohito on Jan. 7, 1989, then Crown Prince Akihito ascended the throne at the age of 55. He was the first to do so as the "symbol of the state and of the unity of the people," a new status given to the world's oldest hereditary monarchy in the current post-World War II Constitution.
Emperor Akihito became the first Japanese emperor to visit China in 1992 and Okinawa, Japan's southern island prefecture where intense fighting occurred during World War II, in 1993.
The imperial couple visited Saipan, one of the Northern Mariana Islands, in 2005 and Palau in 2015 for the 60th and 70th anniversaries of the end of the war in 1945, as part of their trips to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the war.
In January, the couple visited the Philippines to pay their respects to the war dead and promote international goodwill, with this year marking the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the two countries' diplomatic ties.
