มาดูกงสุลใหญ่ไทยในนิวยอร์คจดหมายตอบนิวยอร์คไทมส์หน่อยนะ

จะได้รู้ว่า 'inalienable right' สิทธิมนุษยชนสากลอันมิอาจแปลกแยกได้นั้น

ไม่สำคัญเท่า “maintaining public order”

และ “the need to strike a balance” กับ “freedom of expression”

,“is not always easy to do.” สำหรับเจ้าหน้าที่รัฐไทย

ทำความเข้าใจภาษาการทูต ด้วยภาษาชาวบ้าน ได้ความว่า

การที่จะรักษาสิทธิมนุษยชนในประเทศไทยไม่ให้ถูกละเมิดโดยกฏหมายหมิ่นพระบรมเดชานุภาพกษัตริย์นั้น

“ทำได้ไม่ง่าย”

เหตุเพราะ “The monarchy occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of the Thai people.”

แต่บทความเขาบอกว่า “The law is interpreted broadly, and barely a month goes by without someone being convicted under it and sent to jail for up to 15 years.”

แปลอังกฤษเป็นไทยแบบให้ได้เนื้อแท้ใจความ ไม่ใช่ rhetoric ก็คือ

กฏหมายหมิ่นฯ ถูกตีความกว้างไกลเกินไป ส่งคนไปติดคุก (ข้อหาละ) ๑๕ ปี ง้าย ง่าย

บทความยังเอ่ยถึงเรื่องเงินๆ ทองๆ ที่กงสุลไม่ได้ตอบ

“In addition to the king’s personal holdings, the Crown Property Bureau, a royal trust, controls more than $37 billion in assets, which produce hundreds of millions of dollars in annual income that, according to Thai law, can be spent “at the king’s pleasure.”

ลงท้ายของบทความ strikes a royalist tone, not the republican one.

อ้างอิงพระราชดำรัสรัชกาลที่ ๕ King Chulalongkorn เต็มๆ

“who wrote an open letter to his son outlining the requirements for a monarch.

Be humble and avoid vengefulness, he advised.”

“Being a king means not to be wealthy. It means not bullying others.”

Failure to follow this advice, he said, might lead “our clan to disappear.”

ข้างต้นนี่แปลยาก โปรดทำความเข้าใจกันตามแต่อัตถภาพ

เรารู้จักอยู่คำหนึ่ง ‘vengefulness’ น่าจะหมายความว่า ‘จองล้างจองผลาญ’

เหมือนอย่างที่ผู้บังคับใช้กฏหมายอาญามาตรา ๑๑๒ กระทำกัน
